UGC 1-Year PG Course 2026 permits Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs) to offer these PG programmes through Online, Open and Distance Learning (ODL) modes under the framework of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. 

The move is expected to provide greater academic flexibility while allowing eligible students to complete a master’s degree in just one year. The guidelines are in the UGC Official Notice PDF. 

According to the latest UGC Guidelines 2026, the new one-year PG programmes will be available only to students who have completed a four-year undergraduate degree with Honours or Honours with Research. Universities can introduce these programmes only after meeting the eligibility and approval requirements prescribed by the Commission.

Key Highlights of UGC One-Year PG Guidelines 2026

  • Eligibility Limited to 4-Year UG Graduates: Only candidates with a four-year bachelor’s degree with Honours or Research are eligible for admission to the one-year postgraduate programme.
  • Two-Year PG Continues for 3-Year Graduates: Students holding a conventional three-year bachelor’s degree will continue to pursue the existing two-year postgraduate programme.
  • Approval is mandatory for Universities: HEIs can introduce one-year online or ODL PG programmes only if they already offer the corresponding two-year postgraduate programme in regular, online, or ODL mode.
  • Academic Clearance Required: Institutions must obtain approval from their Board of Studies, Academic Council, and other statutory authorities before launching the programme.
  • Professional Courses Excluded: Professional postgraduate programmes such as MBA, MCA, and PGDM will continue to be regulated by their respective statutory bodies, including AICTE.
