The University Grants Commission (UGC) has directed Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) across India to participate in the UGC-TB elimination campaign 2026 under the Pradhan Mantri TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan.
The initiative aims to use universities, colleges, students, and faculty members to increase TB awareness, reduce stigma, and support India’s tuberculosis elimination efforts.
Key Actions for Higher Education Institutions

- Encourage Ni-kshay Mitra Registration: Universities, faculty members, alumni, and student groups can register as Ni-kshay Mitras to support TB patients with nutritional and other assistance.
- Improve Campus Awareness: Institutions should use websites, social media, and campus communication channels to share reliable TB prevention and treatment information.
- Support Screening Activities: Students and volunteers can participate in awareness and screening initiatives in collaboration with local health authorities.
- Reduce TB Stigma: HEIs can organise essay competitions, cultural programmes, discussions, and awareness campaigns to encourage early diagnosis and treatment.
