UGC directed Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) to introduce NEP 2020 Multidisciplinary Courses (MDCs) from the new academic session. The initiative is part of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and aims to give students greater flexibility to study subjects across traditional disciplinary boundaries.
Under the NEP 2020 multidisciplinary education framework, students can choose courses beyond their primary stream, allowing learners from science, arts, and commerce backgrounds to explore subjects from other disciplines.

Institutional Course Basket
Under the new system, individual departments will develop and contribute Multidisciplinary Courses (MDCs) to a common institutional course basket.
For example, a Zoology department may offer several MDCs that students from non-biology backgrounds can choose during course registration.
Credit Flexibility Under NEP 2020
The MDC courses under NEP 2020 will be integrated with the Choice-Based Credit System (CBCS) and the Four-Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUP).
Credits earned by students can be digitally recorded through the Academic Bank of Credits (ABC), supporting greater flexibility in credit transfer and academic mobility.
Skill and Value-Based Courses
Along with Multidisciplinary Courses, HEIs are also implementing:
- Skill Enhancement Courses (SEC)
- Value Addition Courses (VAC)
These courses are intended to provide students with skills and learning beyond their core subjects.
